Grosseto : It's impossible to resist to the charm of this area, Towns, monuments, art treasures are everywhere. Castles, farms, farmhouses represent a medieval past, one of the most important of the Maremma.

An unparallel sight of hills and fields painted by man's work. Villages, beaches, the sea. One of the most beatiful faces of Tuscany in Maremma,  this magic, shy, intimate land. The countryside keeps elements lost everywhere else. The land, naturally fertile and kissed by the sun, produces highly genuine and flavorful products.

What is remarkable in this area is the nature and the civility of the lifestyle. You can see it in the rocky coves and sandy beaches, in the little towns and villages where you can feel everywhere the spell of their past.

Colline Metallifere : what is interesting in this area is the variety of landscapes, never the same.

From the coast of Follonica and the Scarlino's area you enter in the mainland to discover a rich past tied to the main resources of the area. Iron, copper, lead, zinc and even silver were abundant and sustained a thriving mining and metalworking industry and trade.

Everywhere, traces of this past from all ages can be found. Ancient ovens, old mines, antique tools. You can get a good grasp of it by visiting the Parco Minerario Naturalistico di Gavorrano, a natural park devoted to keep alive the memories of the area's mining past.  You can discover the layers of different ages, the etruscan, the roman , the medieval, in many old towns like  Massa Marittima, Montieri, Roccastrada. Nestled on the top of the hills you can admire the breathtaking panoramas.

 

Area del Tufo : This area is the southern mainland part of Maremma, along the Fiora river. You can just wander without a precise destination and just feel the sensations the landscape gives you.

Everything here seems to exist only because of the Tufo rock. From the Etruscan necropolis to the Roman Tombs, from the building of the Medieval  houses, roads, stables,  to the modern cellars. Whole villages seems just to be born out of it with houses that appear to grow seemlessly from the rock underneath. 
Visit the magical Pitigliano and Sorano, the mysterious necropolis of Sovana or Poggio al Buco, or Spa towns like Saturnia.

 

Il grande impero romano costruì in queste terre strade e ponti per facilitarne le comunicazioni, dando vita a varie aziende agricole, destinate a mantenere la prosperità delle colvitvazioni e a incentivare i commerci.

Sono evidenti anche le tracce del periodo medievale e rinascimentale. Manciano è fra i borghi più ricchi di tali testimonianze.

La Costa d'Argento: this is the most southern part of Tuscany on the coast, bordered by two natural area, Uccellina Mountains and Burano lake. Driving on the Aurelia, the main highway that cut accross the area, one will see the coast on one side with its marine pine trees forest and the hills crowned by many ancient villages on the other. Montiano, Magliano, Capalbio and many other little towns await you with their fascinating traditions and flavors, closed behind their ancient walls. 
The sight of Orbetello and its lagoon, famous for its marine wildlife, has often a surreal quality.

 

The Argentario, long ago an island, now a peninsula, is a green mountain surrounded by beautiful coasts,  a paradise for boating and in general for sea lovers.
From Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole and Cala Galera, sailing and motor boats alike leave in every season to go along the coast and to the beautiful islands, like Giglio or Giannutri,  of Arcipelago Toscano,  In a clear day from the top of the Argentario you can see forever, even the distant island of Corsica.
The Argentario is one of the top destination for well-heeled Italians especially from Rome, so you can find there sophisticated shops and a thriving nightlife.
